According to a report in Tuttomercatoweb, West Ham United have agreed a deal with Sampdoria over the sale of midfielder Pedro Obiang.

The Italian editorial claims the Serie A side will pay West Ham an initial loan fee of 2 million euros (£1.8m), followed by an obliged buyout fee of 7 million euros (£6.2m) plus an extra £900k in bonuses.

The former Spain U21 international joined the Hammers from Sampdoria back in the summer of 2015 and has since gone on to make 67 Premier League appearances for the club.

But with the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini as the club’s new manager, it seems Obiang is now deemed surplus to requirements by the new hierarchy and a return to Italy is now on the cards.

West Ham have considerably bolstered their ranks this summer with the likes of Issa Diop, Andriy Yarmolenko, Felipe Anderson, Ryan Fredericks and Jack Wilshere joining the club with roughly £80 million spent.

The east London club in contrast have only sold Reece Burke to Hull City, therefore they may still wish to downsize their squad and recoup some money before the upcoming transfer deadline.

Obiang has been a solid player for the club, but Wilshere’s arrival will no doubt restrict his first-team opportunities further and allowing him to return to Sampdoria makes sense for all parties involved.

The 26-year-old former Atletico Madrid youth player signed a new four-year deal with West Ham last summer, though it appears his time at the London Stadium is now drawing to a close.
