According to a report in the Hull Daily Mail, Bristol Rovers are set to make Jonson Clarke-Harris their highest paid player as they look to tie him down to a new deal to fend off Championship interest.

Hull City, Reading and Wigan Athletic have been cited as suitors in the report.

The Bristol Post even claimed Hull made some enquiries to sign the striker in the summer, and the Tigers were willing to pay £450,000 to bring him to the KCOM Stadium.

If Hull were set on adding him to their ranks, they have now arguably missed their opportunity as Clarke-Harris’s valuation is likely to increase as he becomes a bigger asset at Bristol Rovers.

Moreover, his continuation of his excellent goal scoring form and the subsequent interest of Championship rivals doesn’t do Hull’s chances of grabbing him any favours either.

The Tigers have struggled financially over the past 18 months. The club have seen players like Fraizer Campbell and David Marshall walk away on a free at the end of their contracts despite previously being regulars.

Reading, meanwhile, spent big on Lucas Joao and George Puscas in the summer. The Royals are adopting a different approach, and up against Hull for a player’s signature, they would currently be firm favourites.

Clarke-Harris hit doubles figures in League One last term, while this season he has six goals in ten games. The £450,000 cited figure now looks like a potential bargain which got away from Hull.

The 25-year-old was on Peterborough United’s books during Hull boss Grant McCann’s short spell there. He boasts plenty of potential, and it surely won’t be long before he is plying his trade at Championship level.
