Southampton’s Ronald Koeman has been linked with the Everton job.
According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton must make Ronald Koeman the club’s highest ever paid manager with a salary in the region of £6 million per year to convince him to join.
The Southampton boss has emerged as one of Everton’s top candidates to replace Roberto Martinez who was sacked by the club earlier this month following a disappointing campaign.
The Toffees, backed by majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri, are one of the Premier League’s most established clubs and boast a squad good enough to challenge for the top four.
However, they have vastly underperformed this season and like Southampton, they are in danger of losing their better players such as Romelu Lukaku and John Stones to Europe’s biggest clubs.
Many would consider Everton a so-called bigger club than Southampton, yet the Saints have arguably a better set of players at present and European football to look forward to next season.
The south coast club amassed more points than any other Premier League team bar Leicester City in the second half of last season (39 points from 19 games), and clear progress is being made.
For Koeman to give up everything at St. Mary’s to move to Everton, it surely must be a huge offer and the Liverpool Echo claim a whopping £6 million per year salary may do the trick.
The report claims that the Dutchman is Everton’s number one choice to replace Martinez, though the club must act quickly as Koeman could be in line for a new Southampton contract in the coming weeks.
