Watford signed Domingos Quina from West Ham United on deadline day.
According to a report by AS, Watford beat both Barcelona and Real Madrid to the signing of West Ham United youngster Domingos Quina.
The Spanish report claims both La Liga giants were in for the Portugal U20 international, but it was the player’s brother who ultimately persuaded him to reject their advances and join Watford.
Barcelona and Madrid are said to have been in a fight for Domingos’s signature since the start of summer, while Watford only expressed seriois interest late in the transfer window, completing his signing last Thursday.
Quina originally moved to England as he joined Chelsea from Benfica’s youth academy, but after three years in west London he traded Stamford Bridge for the Hammers back in 2016. He signed a three-year deal at West Ham and was largely regarded as one of their brightest young sparks, with some supporters calling him a potential wonder-kid following his performances for the U23s.
But despite breaking in to the first-team squad last season, speculation arose around his future and many expected the player to join Catalan giants Barcelona once their interest became known.
Watford, however, had other ideas and the Hornets managed to sign him on a four-year contract on deadline day, with Spanish editorial AS claiming the player’s brother was the biggest influence in the deal.
It remains to be seen whether the midfielder can go on to realise his potential at Vicarage Road, but for now it appears bringing him to the club over the competition was an enormous coup for Watford.
