Aston Villa were heavily linked with Sheffield Wednesday’s Sean Clare.

According to a report in the Sheffield Star, Aston Villa have backed out of a move for Sheffield Wednesday’s Sean Clare due to their dire financial situation.
The report claims that the Villans had targeted the 21-year-old immediately after their Championship playoff final defeat to Fulham, with the midfielder’s contract at Wednesday set to expire this summer.
Clare would have been a solid addition for Villa in their bid to freshen up the squad, but details of their dire financial situation over the past week or so has seemingly seen them pull out of a move.

Villa’s head of domestic recruitment Tony Coton has since left the club to join League One bound Sunderland, while owner Tony Xia could be forced to sell the west Midlands side according to the Mirror.
Villa’s expensive gamble to return to the Premier League has failed to come to fruition, and now they find themselves in a situation where they could be forced to sell a host of players at knockdown prices.
It’s a sad state of affairs for one of England’s founder clubs, and Wednesday will know all about financial struggles as the Owls themselves have previously battled and spent a season down in League One.

Clare himself has a big question mark over his future, with the Sheffield Star reporting that he has been offered a new deal by the Yorkshire club though he has yet to put pen-to-paper on an extension.
The midfielder only made a handful of appearances for the Owls last term, yet he is highly-rated by the club and with plenty of potential he has all the ingredients to go on and play Premier League football.
