Reading have signed Lucas Joao from Sheffield Wednesday.
According to a report in Get Reading, Reading have shelled out £5 million to sign Lucas Joao from Sheffield Wednesday.
Reading manager Jose Gomes confirmed the news, telling reporters how he was delighted to bring in the Portuguese striker with just two days of the transfer deadline remaining.
“I am delighted Lucas has agreed to be part of what we’re trying to build here at Reading. A striker I have admired for some time, he has a commanding presence up front and, with a natural eye for goal, he is a player who is very difficult to defend against,” Gomes explained.
Reading supporters got to see first-hand just how clinical Joao can be in-front of goal as the striker netted Wednesday’s third during the Owls’ opening 3-1 victory over the Royals last Saturday.
The 25-year-old becomes the Royals’ eighth signing of the summer, and arguably their most important to date as he will fill the void left behind by the departures of Marc McNulty and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.
Wednesday have several strikers on their books and it was always likely one or two would leave before the deadline. Jordan Rhodes and Sam Winnall both missed out on their opening day victory.
Some supporters, however, may be concerned that the likes of Fernando Forestieri, Atdhe Nuhui and Steven Fletcher are all out of contract next summer. Joao was the only striker on a longer deal.
The Owls may now look to use the money to strengthen elsewhere, whereas Reading are seemingly still in the market for more players with striker George Puscas also heavily linked.
