Aston Villa are reportedly keen on signing Robert Huth.
According to a report in the Mirror (live transfer thread, June 29 at 18:23), Aston Villa have been unable to conclude a deal for free agent Robert Huth due to their financial mess.
The report claims that manager Steve Bruce has identified free agent Huth as a target this summer, but due to the club’s financial woes, they currently can’t afford to finalise a deal for him.
The Villans are seemingly in financial ruins at the moment after their gamble to reach the Premier League failed with a 1-0 Championship playoff final defeat to Fulham last month.
Villa had spent big both in terms of transfer fees and wages in their attempt to return to the top-flight but missing out coupled with the decrease in parachute payments now leaves them in a predicament.
Chinese owner Dr Tony Xia seemingly has his funds all tied up, and so far, his calls for new investment has fallen on deaf ears with nobody seemingly willing to take on the financially straddled club.
Manager Steve Bruce is fully aware that he needs to sell players to balance the books, but that hasn’t stopped him from targeting potential incomers with former Leicester City man Huth an option.
The German centre-back has bags of experience and a Premier League title with the Foxes, and he may see a season in the Championship as an ideal end to what has been a successful career.
But the report in the Mirror claims Villa can’t afford him, even if the defender is willing to take a big pay-cut at Villa Park, leaving Bruce in an even more difficult position with the beginning of pre-season just around the corner.
