Former player Ray Parlour believes Arsenal have made some good additions in the summer and in particular feels Granit Xhaka is an excellent addition in the centre of midfield, Sky Sports report.

The Gunners needed to strengthen the squad in the summer after falling short in the Premier League title race last season, and as many as six new players arrived during the transfer window.

Lucas Perez, Shkodran Mustafi and Granit Xhaka were the so called big-money additions, with the former providing competition for striker Olivier Giroud and the latter two bolstering the defensive side.

Palour, talking to Goals on Sunday, questioned whether Perez can step up following his move from Deportivo La Coruna but had good things to say about both Xhaka and Mustafi.

“Perez, can he step up to the next level? He scored lots of goals for Deportivo last season in a struggling side, so he maybe a good signing,” Parlour was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

“Xhaka has been excellent in midfield and Mustafi was a little bit 50-50 yesterday [against Southampton]. He made a couple of bad mistakes, but he also looked a real leader and that is what they have missed.”

Xhaka arrived at the Emirates Stadium from German side Borussia Monchengladbach and so far the Switzerland international has settled well in the first-team set-up.

Deployed mainly as a holding midfielder, his presence allows the likes of Santi Cazorla to push further forward while Francis Coquelin and Mohamed Elneny provide further options in that position.

Mustafi is arguably a long-term replacement for the ageing Per Mertesacker, and his leadership at the back alongside Laurent Koscielny could make a telling difference in key moments of the season.
