Sheffield Wednesday’s Jordan Rhodes would be a great option for Rangers.

Newly-appointed Rangers boss Steven Gerrard will be scouring the market as he seeks to significantly improve his squad this summer, and Sheffield Wednesday’s Jordan Rhodes could be a superb loan option.

The 28-year-old knows how to find the net, having scored a total of 95 goals at Championship level in 207 appearances – a record of almost one goal every two matches.

Three successive seasons of scoring 20+ league goals in the second tier prompted Middlesbrough to sign him for an eight-figure fee, and he later moved on to Sheffield Wednesday for another big Championship fee.

Rhodes’ career over the past two seasons, however, has stalled somewhat as he made just a handful of Premier League appearances for Boro before making just 17 starts for the Owls last season.

From scoring regularly at Blackburn Rovers, Rhodes has managed just eight goals in his last two seasons and is in desperate need of a change of direction.

At Wednesday, with competition for places including Gary Hooper, Atdhe Nuhiu, Fernando Forestieri and Lucas Joao, Rhodes is unlikely to be afforded many opportunities to rediscover his top form by boss Jos Luhukay.

But with expectedly high wages and Wednesday paying a hefty fee for his services, selling him on this summer may not be a viable option and instead a loan switch could be in the best interests of both parties.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard may not be backed by big funds this summer, therefore utilising the loan market may give him his best shot of closing the gap on Celtic and Rhodes could be a perfect option.

The Scotland international has the ability to be a massive hit in the Scottish Premiership, and after two seasons of frustration, he may be open to just playing regular football again for a big club on the rise.

It’s a deal which would make plenty of sense for all parties involved, not least Wednesday as they could put him in the shop window by loaning him to a team that won’t have any impact on their own promotion aspirations.

Rhodes has a contract at Hillsborough until 2020, therefore a solid goal scoring campaign north of the border could potentially see the Owls at least recoup some of fee they paid for him next summer.
