Arsenal beat Southampton 3-2 in a bizarre game at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck scored twice and somehow missed an absolute sitter during his side’s bizarre 3-2 Premier League win over struggling Southampton at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners headed in to the contest as clear favourites to beat a Saints side fighting for their Premier League survival, but after 20 minutes or so it was the visitors who deservedly led via Shane Long’s opener.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, though, levelled the scoring just before the half-hour mark before Welbeck, a much-scrutinised figure at Arsenal these days, put the Gunners ahead before half-time.

Many expected Arsenal to go on and comfortably win from there on, but Southampton deservedly scored again through Charlie Auston to level the scores at 2-2 before the game really opened up.

Moments after, Arsene Wenger’s side had a huge opportunity to retake the lead as Jack Wilshere teed up Welbeck only for the England international to shank an effort over the bar from all-but three yards.

It was embarrassing from Welbeck, and the groans around the stadium were loud for all to hear, yet he made amends with less than ten minutes to play by heading in the winner from Alex Iwobi’s hanging cross.

The former Manchester United man really does divide opinion in North London and heading in to the game he was seriously down on confidence having failed to score in 16 Premier League games.

Most supporters at the club believe Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette should be the club’s first-choice striker pairing, but Welbeck no doubt has the ability to really make a difference.

But his shocking miss shows how inconsistent he is, and for a player earning £125,000-per-week according to Spotrac, he really ought to be more prolific than his 15 goals in 74 league games for Arsenal demonstrates.
