Harry Kane’s late winner for Tottenham Hotspur in the 2-1 North London derby victory over Arsenal sent social networking sites into overdrive.
Fans, observers, pundits and players took to Twitter in order to voice their opinion on Spurs’ new goal scoring hero, but one particular image stood out among the rest.
The England U21 striker is seen donning a Lionel Messi suit at the Ballon d’Or gala while lifting the prestigious trophy – a nicely worked editing job, yes, but could this be a reality in the future?
Without getting ahead of ourselves, it is worth noting that Kane’s double against the Gunners pushes him alongside Barcelona’s Messi as the top scorer in Europe’s major leagues in 2015.
The 21-year-old has taken his season tally to 12 goals in 14 Premier League starts, with eight of those coming in his last seven matches.
But it is not just his numbers that impress, it’s the variation of goals which make him a top striker and have drawn parallels with former England legend Alan Shearer.
Jamie Carragher recently spoke on Kane’s ability in the final third, and he made a key point in assessing the player’s attributes aside from finding the net.
“His coolness and composure in front of goal is fantastic,” Carragher was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.
“But also the added bits he brings – not just the hold-up play, the working hard and the goals that you’d expect from every centre forward – I think he’s got a touch of class.”
The last Englishman to win the Ballon d’Or crown was former Liverpool striker Michael Owen after he helped the Reds complete a historic League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup treble in 2001.
If Kane’s goals are followed by trophies in the future, however unimaginable in an era containing Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, there is no reason why Kane can’t at least throw his name into the ring.
