Some supporters from rival clubs such as Everton, Stoke City and Swansea City have taken to Twitter to mock Bristol City after the Robins confirmed the signing of Ashley Williams on a free transfer until January.

Williams was viewed as a likely signing for Bristol City after photos emerged of the player travelling to watch Lee Johnson’s side take on Derby County at Pride Park.

Williams has been a free agent following his release from Everton in the summer, and the central defender will be setting his sights on helping City achieve a top-six place this season after just missing out last term.

But supporters from rival clubs feel the experienced defender is past his best. Here are some of the best quotes on Twitter.

The 34-year-old spent three years at Everton since joining from Swansea City. But, with his fitness on the decline, the Toffees seemingly felt he is no longer able to perform at Premier League level.

Williams made 27 Championship starts for Stoke last season. The Potters were among the favourites for promotion, but they struggled on their return to the second tier, winning just 11 games.

The Robins sold Aaron Webster to Brighton and Hove Albion this summer. Manager Lee Johnson has had to place faith in Nathan Baker and Taylor Moore, neither of whom were regulars last season.

Williams will arrive at Ashton Gate boasting plenty of experience. Bristol City fans will be hoping he can replicate his form at former club Swansea City, where he helped the Swans establish in the top flight.
