Derby County are on the lookout for a new manager.

Derby chairman Mel Morris looks on before the Sky Bet Championship match between Cardiff City and Derby County at Cardiff City Stadium on September 27, 2016 in Cardiff, Wales.

According to Odds Checker, bizarrely more than 20% of all bets placed on Derby County’s next manager have gone on Nigel Pearson returning to Pride Park to take over the vacant managerial position.

The Rams are on the lookout for a new manager this summer after Gary Rowett decided to leave the club in the past few days to join fellow Championship side Stoke City.

Rowett’s decision to leave the Rams has angered a lot of the club’s supporters, yet many feel it is an opportunity for a new manager to come in and add more entertainment in terms of playing style.

Despite reaching the playoff semi-finals, Rowett’s style of football often came in for criticism from a section of the Rams’ support with decisions such as selling academy product Will Hughes proving really unpopular.

Names linked to the vacant post such as Brentford’s Dean Smith and former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard have largely been well received from the fans, yet bizarrely another name has dominated the betting patterns.

Over 20% of all bets placed on Derby’s next manager have been put on 33/1 outsider Nigel Pearson, only two years after receiving his marching orders following a terrible start to the 2016/17 campaign.

The former Leicester City manager lasted just nine games as Rams manager, with the team recording just one win and scoring an abysmal three goals. He was sacked with the club in 22nd spot in the Championship.

Perhaps many pundits believe owner Mel Morris could look back on the decision with regret and feel his 33/1 odds represent a gamble worth taking, but surely returning for Pearson would be nonsensical.

The 54-year-old is currently in charge of OH Leuven in Belgium’s second tier and has hardly pulled up any trees, failing to get the club promoted despite heavy backing from the club’s King Power ownership group.

Derby fans would loathe his return, therefore it’s extremely unlikely though under Morris’ ownership you could never rule it out as there have been plenty of bizarre occurrences at Pride Park over the past few seasons.

Odds Checker also state that 12.47% of all odds have gone on current heavy favourite Lampard at 1/5 to take over the Derby reins – a big gamble for both parties should it come to fruition.
