Nottingham Forest’s Virgil Gomis joined Braintree Town on loan.
Braintree Town’s caretaker boss Hakan Hayrettin has told the Essex County Standard how Nottingham Forest youngster Virgil Gomis has given his side a new dimension following his impressive debut.
“Some of the players you have let go might have had a chance with the new manager, but I felt the club needed a forward who could be a focal point. Virgil gives that something that is a bit different,” Hayrettin explained.
“He was off the radar (in Essex) and wasn’t a player who everyone down here was having a look at because they didn’t know anything about him. But my contacts up there told me that he was a player who would suit down to the ground.”
Gomis, a Forest academy product, joined Braintree on an initial 28-day loan and he immediately helped them record their first home victory in the Vanarama National League by starring in the 4-2 win over Bromley.
The Forest U23 striker has plenty of pace and an eye for goal, evident by his opening strike in the win over Bromley and his ability to stretch the play and force defenders onto the back foot.
The 19-year-old has been scoring at an impressive rate for the Forest youth teams, but competitive football is much more important for the player’s development and Braintree is an ideal club to gain experience.
The Essex-based conference side are struggling for goals, therefore Gomis is expected to get minutes there and Hayrettin’s comments suggest they will look to develop their playing style around the pacey striker.
With plenty of competition for places at the City Ground, Forest have taken the right decision to loan out their top youngsters and Gomis will no doubt improve during his stint at the conference club.
