Derby County signed Martyn Waghorn from Ipswich Town in the summer.
Some Ipswich Town fans have questioned Derby County’s decision to sign Martyn Waghorn in the summer, with the player finding himself out of the first-team picture.
The Rams decided to bring the forward in alongside fellow striker Jack Marriott, signing Waghorn for a reported fee in the region of £5 million (Sky Sports) with the player choosing the Midlands club over Middlesbrough.
Waghorn arrived at Pride Park having netted 16 goals in all competitions for Ipswich last term, but so far this season he has largely been restricted to a place on the Derby bench, with David Nugent the preferred choice.
With Ipswich win-less in 11 games and struggling for goals, some supporters rue the club’s decision to sell their top goal scorer and question why Derby chose to sign him to be a mere squad player.
Waghorn, 28, has only made four Championship starts for Derby this term, with his last start coming in the disappointing 1-0 defeat away at Rotherham United.
The former Rangers man is capable of playing in several positions in the final third, but with a healthy competition for places, it appears Derby manager Frank Lampard clearly thinks he has better options available to him.
Ipswich predominantly played with two upfront under former manager Mick McCarthy, and that perhaps suited Waghorn more than playing the lone striker role which Lampard prefers at Derby.
There is still time for Waghorm to come good with the Rams, but judging by his start at the Midlands club, it’s understandable why Ipswich fans now question his the reasons for his transfer.
