Blackburn Rovers signed Paul Downing on a permanent deal in January 2018.
Blackburn Rovers managers Tony Mowbray says the club will listen to the right offer for Paul Downing this month with the player seemingly out of favour at Ewood Park, the Lancashire Telegraph report.
“I’m not in any rush to push Paul out of the door,” Mowbray told the Lancashire Telegraph.
“Ultimately that decision will come down to him. What he has done for our football club since he’s been here has been exceptional, given that we signed him at the last minute of the transfer window.
“But if something that’s right for Paul comes up and he knocks on my door then we will listen to that.”
Downing originally joined Blackburn on a season-long loan deal in the summer of 2017, signing from MK Dons. He later joined permanently last January, signing a one-and-a-half-year deal.
The 27-year-old featured several times as Rovers went on to win promotion from League One, but this season he has fallen out favour, making just three Championship appearances with his last start coming in early December.
Blackburn’s regular centre-back pairing this season has been Darragh Lenihan and Charlie Mulgrew, while Derrick Williams and Jack Rodwell can also provide cover in the middle.
With Downing’s contract expiring in the summer, perhaps Mowbray doesn’t envisage keeping the player beyond the season and feels the club will benefit more by trying to raise funds for him now.
The former West Bromwich Albion man has predominantly featured below Championship level, enjoying spells at Barnet, Walsall where he made over 150 League One appearances and MK Dons before moving to Ewood Park.
