Motherwell host Rangers at Fir Park this weekend.
Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson says Rangers look a lot more solid at the back this season, and that manager Steven Gerrard is able to utilise different formations with the players he has at his disposal, motherwellfc.co.uk report.
Gerrard has enjoyed an unbeaten start to life as Rangers boss, with their latest 1-0 Europa League win over Russian side Ufa taking the former Liverpool midfielder’s run to 10 games without defeat.
This weekend the Gers will face a different kind of test against a Well side currently sitting at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership table, coming off the back of their Betfred Cup win over Livingston.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Motherwell boss Robinson feels his upcoming opponents will be tougher to score against this season, says that they as very disciplined and well-organised.
“They’ve (Rangers) started well, there’s no denying it and look a lot more solid. They don’t look as if they are going to concede too many goals,” Robinson explained.
“They are a very disciplined, well-organised side. It’s obvious the new manager and the staff have emphasised that so far this season. They have threats up front, you have already seen what Morelos can do and they’ve brought Laff [Kyle Lafferty] in.”
Building from the back:
While Rangers haven’t fired on all cylinders going forward yet, newly-appointed boss Gerrard has ensured they are capable of still winning matches by shoring up what was a leaky defence.
The Gers have managed six clean sheets in their opening 10 games in all competitions this season, with goalkeeper Allan McGregor in superb form, and Connor Goldson impressing.
It seems Gerrard has learned a lot from his playing days, and in particular from former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez, who was meticulous in his preparation. The former Reds skipper cites the current Newcastle United manager as the best tactical coach he has ever worked with (Liverpool Echo).
It’s too early to know whether Gerrard’s Rangers side can genuinely challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title this season, but it appears the young manager is going the right way about it.
