Millwall head into summer pre-season with the smallest Championship squad after seeing a host of players leave including key striker Lee Gregory who has opted to move to rivals Stoke City.

The Lions must make some deals quickly, and Derby County’s Nick Blackman could be a viable option.

The 29-year-old is out of favour at Pride Park. After joining the club in January 2016 on a three-and-a-half-year deal, Blackman has only featured 23 times in a Derby shirt, spending the past two years out on loan.

Blackman’s deal at Derby expires this summer. However, in a strange twist, he has signed a 12-month extension at Pride Park, but the Rams could end up releasing him this summer according to the Derby Telegraph.

It seems Derby’s decision has been forced by Financial Fair Play. Either way, he is seemingly available to leave, and Millwall should consider making a move as they look extremely light on players.

The Lions don’t have a recognised goalkeeper after David Martin joined West Ham United, while Ben Amos returned to Bolton Wanderers after his loan spell and Jordan Archer has been released.

Millwall boss Neil Harris must first sign a new shot-stopper or two, yet he has similar problems at the opposite end of the pitch as Lee Gregory’s impending move to Stoke City leaves a big void to fill.

The club’s only senior strikers are now a 35-year-old Steve Morison, Tom Elliott who scored a meagre three goals last term and Tom Bradshaw who is still out after suffering a knee ligament injury back in November.

Blackman has pedigree. He topped the scoring charts for Reading with 11 goals in 25 games before moving to Derby in the 2015/16 season, and the forward must be itching for another chance at Championship level.
