Millwall followed their victory over Derby County with defeat to Preston North End.
Millwall boss Neil Harris has slammed his side’s performance against Preston North End days after recording arguably their best league win of the season over Derby County, South London Press and Mercury reports.
“If I’d had five or six changes to make I’d have made them all. That’s how disappointed I was with the group,” Harris said on making half-time substitutions.
“We didn’t get out of the traps, didn’t get going, weren’t at the races, didn’t get first balls, second balls – couldn’t get near the ball. It was hugely frustrating. Players just didn’t do what they were supposed to do. I praise my players for their second-half performance but not the first, it was terrible.”
Millwall found themselves 3-0 down by half-time at home to Preston, going on to lose 3-1.
The result comes days after the Lions overcame Derby, stifling the play-off challengers to record a 1-0 away victory at Pride Park.
The Rams knew that a victory over Millwall last Wednesday would have taken them back into the top six. Harris’s side had only won seven points on the road all season. It pointed to a home-banker.
But Millwall completely nullified the Rams. Frank Lampard’s side only managed one shot on target all game: a tame Fikayo Tomori header from a hopeful cross in the last minute of stoppage time.
It was an important three points in Millwall’s bid to preserve their Championship status, but the struggling south London side reverted to type at home to Preston as they fell apart in an awful first-half display.
Millwall’s defeat sees them remain in 20th position, four points above the drop zone. Victory for Preston sees them jump up to tenth while Derby have the chance to move into the top six again if they beat rivals Nottingham Forest on Monday.
