Millwall are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper after David Martin joined West Ham United.
Millwall boss Neil Harris says his side are very far down the line in securing a replacement for David Martin after the goalkeeper made an 11th hour switch to West Ham United, South London Press reports.
“We spoke before the season finished about him staying – he [David Martin] wanted to stay, we offered him a contract and he accepted it verbally. It was just a question of getting it done. Right at the 11th hour West Ham showed an interest and he wanted to explore that avenue,” Harris explained.
“It means we’re looking for two goalkeepers rather than one. We are in talks and a long way down the line with one. I’m relatively positive there will be an outcome on that one too.”
Martin’s contract at Millwall was set to expire this summer. The 33-year-old was first-choice at The Den and expected to sign on for another year before West Ham made a surprise move.
The Hammers have signed him with the idea of making him third choice behind Lukasz Fabianski and Adrian. Growing up as a West Ham supporter, ending his career at the Olympic Stadium makes sense.
Millwall, however, are now without a recognised senior goalkeeper heading into the summer. Jordan Archer’s contract is up and he has been told he can leave, while Ben Amos returned to Bolton Wanderers.
According to The Mirror (page 57; June 06 2019), Millwall have joined the race to sign Ipswich Town’s Polish goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski following the Tractor Boys’ relegation.
The 31-year-old could be the goalkeeper Harris hopes is set to join Millwall but, having been linked with a £4 million move to Crystal Palace last summer (Daily Mirror), it is unlikely Ipswich will sell for cheap.
