Paris Saint-Germain ace Angel Di Maria has voted for his compatriot Lionel Messi when asked who was better out of the Argentine superstar and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Spanish paper AS reports.

Ronaldo and Messi have dominated world football over the past decade, winning a host of individual honours including an astonishing 10 Balon d’Or awards between them.

But like all sporting greats within the same era, comparisons will be made and, considering each ply their trade at El Clasico rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid, a day does not go by when the two are not spoken about in the same breath.

When asked for his opinion on the matter, Di Maria (signed from Manchester United for a reported £44.3m fee as quoted by the BBC) spoke highly of his former Madrid teammate Ronaldo but opted for Messi as he describes the diminutive forward as an alien from another planet.

“Cristiano is an excellent player, but being in the same era as Messi has been difficult,” the PSG ace told AS.

“There are no words to describe Leo [Messi]. He always surprises you. A year goes by and Messi is the best, another year goes by and he remains the best. He’s a player from another world, an alien.”

While Ronaldo has picked up the last two Balon d’Or awards for the world’s best footballer, his form this season has taken a sharp dip as the 33-year-old has notched just eight La Liga goals in 17 outings.

Messi, on the other hand, continues to find the net with great regularity for Barcelona and he currently tops La Liga’s scoring charts with 20 goals in 21 starts while also contributing with 10 assists.

Ronaldo still has the possibility to gain the more prestige honours, however, what with the Champions League still an option for Madrid and the World Cup in Russia now on the horizon.
