Fulham spent big money in the summer as they bid for Premier League survival.
Former Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer believes many of the club’s new signings lack ‘steel’ and Premier League experience and that could ultimately be their downfall this season, the BBC reports.
The Cottagers were one of the most active clubs in the transfer market this summer, bringing in a host of new players as they took their spending north of a whopping £100 million.
Slavisa Jokanovic’s side were terrific as they won promotion via the Championship playoffs last term, and they built on a talented squad with several players who arrive in west London with impressive CVs.
But Schwarzer is wary despite the club’s large spend this summer, telling the BBC:
“The money Fulham have spent is quite a shock, the first promoted club to spend over £100m. For any team to do that before the start of a season is remarkable,” he said.
“The big question is the players coming in, very few have Premier League experience apart from Andre Schurrle. Will they be able to adapt quickly? Fulham need steel and Premier League experience, not many of them have it.”
Fulham spent big with the likes of Jean Seri, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, Fabricio, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Alfie Mawson arriving, but only the latter two of their permanent signings have Premier League experience and both are still in the early stages of their respective careers.
Loan signings Andre Schurrle and Calum Chambers know their way around the top-flight, but they’re arriving at the club having had limited game-time over the past 12 months, and they may take time to get up to speed.
Jokanovic named seven new signings in his starting eleven to face Crystal Palace on the opening day of the campaign Saturday, but despite a bright start Fulham fell to a disappointing 2-0 defeat.
