Manchester United are on the verge of a deal for former Hull City man Harry Maguire.
According to Sky Sports, Manchester United have agreed an £80 million deal to sign Leicester City’s Harry Maguire – a move which if completed would see Hull City net £9.45 million.
The Hull Daily Mail claim the Tigers inserted a clause entitling them to 15% of the profits should Leicester sell Maguire. The central defender joined the Foxes from Hull for £17 million two years ago.
The £63 million profit the Foxes are seemingly set to make goes to show how crazy the market has become in the past two years, but it’s a deal which has huge benefits for Hull.
The Tigers have struggled financially over the past 12 months and their off-field issues have had a knock-on effect on the field with last season’s manager Nigel Adkins resigning in the summer.
Adkins has since been replaced by former Doncaster Rovers boss Grant McCann, and he has been tasked with rebuilding the squad this summer after several departures including striker Fraizer Campbell.
Hull have managed to sign seven players this summer, but only goalkeeper Matt Ingram and their latest addition George Honeyman from Sunderland are experienced at Championship level.
Grant has a tough job on his hands at the KCOM Stadium with the team tipped to struggle this season, but Maguire moving to Old Trafford could give Hull a chance to bring in extra quality before the deadline.
The reported £80 million deal would eclipse the current world record fee for a defender, currently held by United’s Premier League rivals Liverpool who signed Virgil van Dijk for £75 million from Southampton.
