Sheffield Wednesday haven’t signed anyone this summer.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay says this summer is unique to him in management, although he adds he must respect the situation when quizzed on the lack of investment in new players, Sheffield Star reports.
The Owls are one of only two clubs in the Championship who have yet to sign a player this summer – be it a permanent deal or a loan deal – with the transfer deadline now only a couple of weeks away.
When asked for his opinion on the situation, Luhukay suggested that it’s a new experience for him and the lack of investment means he has extra motivation to work with what he has at his disposal.
“This is the first time, after 22 years as a manager, that I work with the same team from the start of pre-season to the new season, but it is how it is. I must respect the situation,” he told the Sheffield Star.
Paying the price of failure to reach the Premier League?
Sheffield Wednesday spent big both in terms of fees and wages in their bid to reach the Premier League, but after two failed playoff attempts, and last season’s struggling campaign, they are now surely paying the price.
Jack Hunt left Sheffield Wednesday on a permanent deal following his switch to Bristol City, while Jordan Rhodes joined Norwich City on loan. The club still have a squad which is thought to be far too big and costly in terms of wages.
Luhukay has three competitive goalkeepers, and as many as six forwards vying for only two spots. However, Sheffield Wednesday are still short on centre-back options which they can’t seem to rectify.
As things stand, provided it remains injury-free, Sheffield Wednesday surely still has the quality to mount a push for promotion to the Premier League, but they would no doubt stand a better chance with a more rounded squad.
