Sheffield Wednesday have been extremely quiet this summer.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay has told the Sheffield Star that his only focus right now is on the existing players at the club, when quizzed about whether there was any news on potential transfers
The Owls have been arguably the quietest club in the Championship this summer in terms of transfers, with only two players leaving as the club seek to comply with Financial Fair Play rules.
Luhukay would no doubt like to bolster his squad with a few key additions, notably a new defender or two, but it seems his hands are tied as the club instead are still looking to decrease the squad size.
When asked if there were any incomings in the pipeline following the departures of Jack Hunt and Jordan Rhodes, Luhukay admitted he has turned his full attention to what he currently has available.
“When the transfer window is open, anything can happen. But we only have the focus on every day working with our team and what we have. We are working intensively to bring this team in a good progression,” the Dutchman said.
Luhukay’s comments about only focusing on what he has is a strong suggestion that no new arrivals are imminent, with the August 9 transfer window deadline drawing ever closer.
Wednesday are seemingly paying the price for their overspending over the past few seasons, creating little leeway for boss Luhukay to reinforce the squad in key areas.
Players such as Rhodes and Steven Fletcher have failed to live up to expectations, and it now appears the Owls are stuck with the latter with the Sheffield Star claiming his current £30,000 per week wages are a major stumbling block to a potential exit.
Fletcher has become surplus to requirements at Hillsborough as Wednesday remain top heavy, yet at the other end of the pitch the club are desperately short of numbers following the departures of Hunt, Glenn Loovens and Frederico Venancio.
