Sheffield Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay suggests a regular run in the first-team and added trust placed in his ability are two key reasons behind Atdhe Nuhiu’s impressive form at the end of the campaign, the Sheffield Star report.
The nine-capped Kosovo international looked set to leave Hillsborough this summer as his contract was due to expire and heavy competition for places restricted his playing time.
But an incredible run of nine goals and two assists in his final eight games of the season prompted the club to hand the striker a new and well-deserved contract extension.
Speaking to reporters, manager Jos Luhukay shares his reasoning behind the 28-year-old’s dramatic change in fortunes.
“He didn’t play so many games before my time. In the time he has come in, maybe he feels the trust that he needs,” the Dutch coach told the Sheffield Star.
“Maybe that’s why he feels the trust he needs and he plays good and scores important goals for us. He scored three (against Norwich) and can go for a good feeling in the holiday.”
First-team regular next season?
Nuhiu signed off the season in spectacular fashion, scoring a brilliant hat-trick as the Owls dismantled Norwich City 5-1 to signal their promotion intentions for next season.
Wednesday have an abundance of talent yet injuries largely disrupted their campaign, while under former manager Carlos Carvalhal, it seemed several players were just going through the motions and lacking confidence.
Nuhiu fell into that bracket, yet now he has a new lease of life under Luhukay and his excellent form during the end of the campaign rivalled any other striker outside the Premier League.
The 28-year-old linked up with Fernando Forestieri brilliantly and in Luhukay’s wing-back system, he appears to be thriving from the extra responsibility and it certainly stands him in good stead ahead of next season.
