Since Alan Pardew exchanged the North East for South London, both Newcastle United and Crystal Palace have experienced quite a change in fortunes.
The former West Ham United boss was never popular on Tyneside, largely because of his apparent friendship with under-fire owner Mike Ashley and his rather controversial appointment in 2010.
Despite three relatively solid years at St. James’ Park, tensions were at boiling point at the beginning of the campaign as the Magpies’ slow start resulted in a seven-game winless streak.
Five wins on the bounce and a top half position was to follow, but that wasn’t enough to convince the Newcastle fans of Pardew’s ability and there was a real sense of dissatisfaction all around.
With the Palace job vacant, the 53-year-old’s final Premier League game in charge of Newcastle was a 3-2 victory Everton – a result which left them in 10th spot, whereas the Eagles were languishing in 18th.
Pardew moving to Selhurst Park was a decision which sparked plenty of debate across social media sites, as surely this was deemed as a step down in the footballing world?
Regardless of club stature, ensuing results suggest that it was ultimately the correct move as the table has transformed quite spectacularly since his confirmation as Palace boss in early January.
Of all the 20 clubs, only Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers occupy the exact same spots, whereas the Geordies and Palace are the biggest movers, though in opposing directions.
As per the table provided by Opts Stats above, it doesn’t make for pretty reading for caretaker boss John Caver and the Newcastle fans – as a run of just two wins in 11 is relegation form.
Palace, on the other hand, have been the Premier League’s fifth best club since Pardew’s appointment, claiming an astonishing seven victories and 22 points from 11 league encounters.
The irony of it all is the clear misconception regarding Pardew’s managerial ability, not only on Tyneside but throughout the whole of England.
