Barcelona fullback Martin Montoya is set to leave the club in January with Liverpool touted as a possible destination.

The agent of Barcelona fullback Martin Montoya has told reporters that his client is all-but certain to leave the club in the January transfer window.

The Spanish U23 international has been used sparingly this season, failing to dislodge the ever-present Dani Alves and thus becoming increasingly frustrated at his lack of first-team action.

There have been numerous links to both Serie A and the Bundesliga, but it is Liverpool who appear to be the most likely given their long-standing interest in former La Masia youth product.

Montoya’s agent Juan de Dios Carrasco updated the situation when speaking to Spanish reporters and admitted to having been in contact with potential buyers.

“Montoya will be moving on next month – I’m 100 per cent certain. At the moment we are studying which would be the best club for Martín so that he can continue his development as a player. Clubs in Germany, England and Italy have been in contact with a view to signing him,” he said, quoted by Mundodeportivo.

The Reds currently boast a number of options at right-back but given Glen Johnson’s age and Javier Manquillo’s loan situation, a potential first-team spot could easily become available.

Brendan Rodgers’ men have defended poorly so far this season, adding extra reason as to why they should dip into the transfer market and bring in some much-needed quality.
