Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has responded to questions over the upcoming January transfer window by suggesting his side will be in the market for a new attacker, The Telegraph report.

Danny Ings’ latest injury leaves the Reds with the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi battling for a place upfront yet the upcoming African Nations Cup poses another problem.

Sadio Mane is fully expected to represent Senegal throughout January, leaving Liverpool short on genuine wide players and could prompt Firmino to take his place out on the wing.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Klopp admits a change in position for Firmino could leave him short upfront, and as such the club are actively looking at dipping in to the transfer market and bolstering their options.

“Three strikers is enough, I think. But when Sadio is away we will be without a winger. We do not have many wingers, I would say. Roberto Firmino could play as a kind of a winger, which would then just give us two strikers. That’s how it is,” Klopp said.

When quizzed on whether he is seeking a new addition, the German responded: “Yes. We watch the market all the time and we need to be prepared for different situations and one of them is injuries.”

“The African Nations Cup we already knew about so we don’t need to be influenced or surprised, but it could be a moment when we approach the market.”

Liverpool certainly haven’t struggled for goals this season, netting an impressive 24 times in ten league games to date, yet the absence of Mane could pose a potential problem.

The Reds have a number of intriguing fixtures during January, not least a trip to Old Trafford to face rivals Manchester United while also welcoming fellow title rivals Chelsea to Anfield.
