Rangers and Sunderland have been linked with Hibernian’s Dylan McGeouch.
Hibernian boss Neil Lennon says he has only an outside chance of holding on to midfielders John McGinn and Dylan McGeouch this summer with the latter’s contract set to expire, Herald Scotland reports.
McGeouch has attracted the attentions of several clubs due to his contract situation, with the Herald Scotland citing both League One side Sunderland and Scottish Premiership rivals Rangers as suitors.
Both clubs are much bigger than Hibs and represent a potential step up for the newly-capped Scotland international midfielder, so Lennon is realistic when he opens up on his side’s chances of keeping him.
“We hope [McGinn and McGeouch] are still there next season,” Lennon told Herald Scotland. “Obviously it is an outside hope, particularly when you look at Dylan’s situation.”
“But you never say never. Even Dylan’s situation, there still might be something there. There has been no forward progress anywhere else, although that might chance when he comes back from South America.”
Despite reported interest from Scottish champions Celtic, Hibs have a better chance of holding on to McGinn – or at least commanding a decent fee with the player having 12 months left on his contract at Easter Road.
But their chances of retaining McGeouch are remote considering his contract situation, and the fact the talented midfielder grew up in Glasgow and represented both Celtic as Rangers as a youth product.
The 25-year-old is at an age where he is ready to move on to a bigger challenge, which he would no doubt find at Rangers under Steven Gerrard or possibly Sunderland.
The Gers arguably represent the most enticing option despite McGeouch’s Celtic roots, and without the need to pay a transfer fee he could turn out to be one of the bargains of the summer.
