Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy admits spending hours in his hotel room on England duty pondering over a move to Arsenal before finally opting to remain at the King Power Stadium, The Sun reports.
After winning the Premier League title against the odds, a number of Leicester players were heavily linked with an exit during the summer with Vardy mooted as Arsenal’s number one transfer target.
Many felt the England international forward would make the move to the Gunners, yet in an intriguing twist Vardy opted to remain at Leicester alongside the likes of Riyad Mahrez and Kasper Schmeichel.
Speaking to reporters of his near Arsenal switch, the former Fleetwood Town man admits pondering the move for hours before finally listening to both his heart and head and opting to stay with Leicester.
“I was in a hotel room for many hours of every day with nothing to do. You get that much time to think about every single thing,” the 29-year-old told The Sun.
“You think about what might happen, what might not, where you could be, where not.”
“I won’t beat around the bush. Every time I thought about it — and every aspect of it I thought about — both my head and my heart were saying, ‘You need to stay’.”
Leicester may find it a struggle to retain their Premier League title, yet the Foxes do have Champions League football to look forward to for the first time in the club’s history.
Vardy has already become a hero among Leicester supporters, but by remaining at the club he could become much more with the club vowing to go on and achieve even more success.
So far this season, Claudio Ranieri’s men have picked up four points from their opening three games.
