Former player Matt Le Tissier believes Southampton’s biggest task this summer is keeping hold of boss Ronald Koeman amid speculation over his future, the Mirror reports.
The Saints have experienced eventful summers over the past few seasons, losing a number of key players such as Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana, Morgan Schneiderlin and Nathaniel Clyne.
This season they will certainly have teams looking at their players, yet the biggest loss could be boss Ronald Koeman as speculation mounts over the Dutchman’s future at the club.
The former Feyenoord boss’s contract at St. Mary’s expires in the summer of 2017, and club hero Le Tissier has urged his former side to prioritise tying him down to a new deal.
“[Keeping Koeman] is the most important thing this summer. That would be the biggest boost to season ticket sales, which is what clubs look at at this time of year,” Le Tissier told the Mirror.
“I think if they could get him sorted out on a new contract that would be massive for the club. Hopefully we’ll get that sorted and something will be announced shortly.”
Koeman has made no secret of his desire to return to Barcelona one day, suggesting to the Mirror that if the opportunity arises he would find a switch to the Nou Camp hard to turn down.
While the Catalans currently employ Luis Enrique as their manager, a disastrous run of form over the past few weeks could prompt questions over the former midfielder’s future at the club.
Koeman will no doubt be in the minds of top clubs contemplating a managerial change, and Southampton could struggle to persuade him to stay if a top Champions League side come calling.
