Southampton have bolstered their squad this summer.
Former Premier League great Matt Le Tissier has been impressed with Southampton’s transfer business so far, telling Sky Sports how the club have freshened things up.
The Saints, widely regarded as a well-run established top-flight club, almost lost their Premier League status last season as they performed disappointingly and narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship.
The south coast club needed to make some changes this summer and inject some quality into the squad and so far, they’ve done just that with four new arrivals amid some big spending.
Speaking to Sky Sports and published in the live transfer thread on July 13 at 16:41, Le Tissier feels change has been needed and feels the supporters will be pleased with the club’s business so far.
“It’s been good to see. It was something that was needed after last season. It’s a freshen up that the fans needed to see at the club, going out and making some statements in the transfer market,” Le Tissier said.
Goalkeeper Angus Gunn has arrived from Manchester City, and it’s expected the youngster will gradually take over from the ageing Fraser Foster who has been linked with an exit on loan.
Midfielders Stuart Armstrong and Mohamed Elyounoussi have arrived from Scottish champions Celtic and Swiss side Basel respectively, and they will significantly bolster what was a problem area for the Saints last term.
The latest signing to join Mark Hughes’s side is defender Jannik Vestergaard from Borussia Monchengladbach – a potential long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk who left to join Liverpool in a record deal last January.
Southampton have opted to sign young players with plenty of potential which is a smart way to go. They’re investing for the future, and by signing younger players they can be more flexible when it comes to wages.
