The Trotters would have eyed this fixture as a potential three-pointer in their fight against relegation, but they were second best throughout and rarely looked like troubling the visitors.
Goals from Alan Browne and Tom Barkhuizen gave Preston a commanding lead, with Bolton finding a late consolation when Clayton Donaldson came off the bench and managed to halve the deficit.
The defeat leaves Bolton second from bottom of the Championship and four points adrift of Rotherham United in 21st spot, prompting fans to take to Twitter to vent their frustration at their side’s shortcomings.
Bolton have won only once in the league since September and their chances of survival appear to be decreasing with every passing week.
Against Preston, the Lancashire side simply lacked confidence and a cutting edge. According to WhoScored, Bolton managed just seven shots in total during the game, with a pass-accuracy rate of 60% – compared to Preston’s 16 shots and 75% pass success.

Phil Parkinson’s men have struggled for goals all season, scoring just 20 in 31 games, and missing out on a striker during the January transfer window now leaves them in a precarious position.
With seven points separating Bolton from Millwall in 20th spot, it’s starting to look like it could be three from four in the race for Championship survival, with Reading and Ipswich Town the other two in trouble.
