Josh Windass has been vocal over his move to Wigan Athletic recently.
Wigan Athletic summer signing Josh Windass has told Wigan Today that the reason for him leaving Glasgow Rangers to join the Latics during the recent transfer window was purely a footballing decision.
“It was purely a footballing decision for me to come here. Everyone seems to have their own idea about why it happened, but I can tell you in was purely footballing reasons. I felt it was the best move for my career, and I hope I can prove any doubters wrong”, he explained
Windass originally joined Rangers from Accrington Stanley under former boss Mark Warburton, and he quickly established himself as one of the most exciting players to play at Ibrox in recent years.
He netted an impressive 18 goals in 41 games in all competitions for Gers last term, tying him alongside Alfredo Morelos as the club’s top scorer – despite playing in a deeper position further from goal.
The 24-year-old’s value had increased tenfold during his time at Rangers, but new manager Steven Gerrard seemingly didn’t see Windass as central to his plans.
With several new signings made during the summer, Windass was pushed down the pecking order at Ibrox and swiftly moved to Wigan after the Scottish Premiership club accepted a £2 million bid on deadline day (Sun).
Windass has since told Jim White on Talksport (September 20 at 12pm) how he thought Rangers shouldn’t have accepted the bid, and that Gerrard was set to use him in a wide role he wasn’t particularly keen on.
His move to Wigan has worked out well for all parties so far, with Windass beginning to flourish at the DW Stadium (grabbing an assist in the 1-0 win over Bristol City) and Rangers progressing well under their new manager.
