Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay says he is hopeful Marco Matias and Daniel Pudil will return for the club’s midweek clash with West Bromwich Albion but admits it may come too soon, the Sheffield Star reports.

“Marco and Daniel were not 100 per cent in our last training session on Thursday so that’s why they couldn’t play against Leeds. Maybe we have a hope for Wednesday. We will see how they are over the next few days,” Luhukay explained.

Both players missed the 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Friday night, with Fernando Forestieri and Jordan Thornily coming in to replace them, as the Owls were fortunate to come away with a point.

Pudil has been a rock at the back for Sheffield Wednesday since playing in a central role under Luhukay, and the Yorkshire club will be desperate for his return against a free-scoring Baggies side in midweek.

West Brom are the Championship’s leading scorers, and in Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez they have enough firepower to cause opponents an abundance of problems at the back.

Matias, on the other hand, has found his way back into the Owls’ first-team plans and was in a rich vein of form prior to his injury – scoring twice and grabbing an assist in his last three league outings. The 29-year-old’s position in the first-team may depend on the form of Forestieri, with both players taking up a similar role playing off of hold-up strikers Atdhe Nuhiu or Steven Fletcher.
