Jos Luhukay outlines Sheffield Wednesday’s summer transfer strategy

Sheffield Wednesday will look to make the necessary changes to challenge for promotion next season.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay says he hopes to have 60 to 80 percent of his squad in place for the start of pre-season – and then hints at a couple of additions afterwards, the Sheffield Star report.

Wednesday fans can head into the summer with optimism ahead of next season as the club’s form over the past ten matches of the season would equate to that of a promotion-chasing team over a 46-game campaign.

The return of star players such as Fernando Forestieri and Barry Bannan has given the club a huge lift, while the change in system under Luhukay means Sheffield Wednesday have looked more fluent going forwards.

Sheffield Wednesday will no doubt be among the favourites for a top six spot next season, though with a couple of additions in key areas, there’s no reason why they can’t challenge for an automatic promotion spot.

Speaking to reporters, Luhukay has outlined his ideal summer in terms of piecing his squad together, as he hopes to have the majority of his players in place reason for pre-season games.

“We must take our time and when we do something have 100 per cent trust in what we do. I think that is important,” Luhukay explained.

“Of course, you hope when you start (pre-season) that you have 60 to 80 per cent of your squad in place and maybe in pre-season or later you have one or two additions where something must happen. That is the ideal situation. But we must wait in the next two months to see how the squad will be.”

Sheffield Wednesday are light in defence – even more so following the release of Glenn Loovens, and will therefore be hoping they can make the popular Frederico Venancio’s loan move at Hillsborough permanent.

Aside from the defence, extra creativity is needed in the midfield area and one name which has been linked with a move to Wednesday is Sunderland’s George Honeyman (The Sun) following the Black Cats’ relegation.

Another name linked with the Owls is Peterborough’s Jack Marriott (Sky Sports), after he topped the League One scoring charts with 27 goals in 44 games. Having said that, Luhukay has plenty of attackers at his disposal so it would come as a surprise if the club met the £5 million asking price.
