Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney has been linked with a move to Everton.

Everton defender Phil Jagielka says supporters would welcome Wayne Rooney’s return to Goodison Park and suggets the Manchester United man is currently in limbo, The Telegraph reports.

The report highlights the speculation linking Rooney with a dramatic return to Everton, some 12 years after leaving the Merseyside club for Old Trafford in a big-money deal.

The England international has struggled for game-time at United of late, starting just once in the last five weeks with that being in the Europa League against Turkish side Fenerbahce.

Rooney’s sudden relegation to the United bench has prompted speculation over a potential exit, and Jagielka admits it is a difficult situation for the 31-year-old before suggesting he would be welcome at Everton.

“Maybe a fresh start somewhere would help him or maybe he’s a game away from being a hero again. It’s a difficult one,” Jagielka told The Telegraph.

“He is an Evertonian and I’m sure the fans would take to him. He’s built the bridges that he potentially burnt many, many years ago when he was a young lad and you’ll just have to watch this space.”

New Manchester United signing Wayne Rooney

Rooney left Everton under a dark cloud back in 2004, yet he has since appeared for the Toffees in Duncan Ferguson’s testimonial while choosing the club for his own testimonial in August.

The England skipper is seemingly no longer cut out to play as a striker, while question marks remain over his ability to play in a deeper role on a regular basis for a top club like United.

A move back to Everton may be a possibility should he wish to leave United, yet at 31 he still has a few years left at the very top; therefore it would be a surprise to see him depart Old Trafford anytime soon.
