Ipswich Town striker Martyn Waghorn has been left out of the squad altogether for his side’s opening game of the Championship season as the Tractor Boys face newcomers Blackburn Rovers.

Waghorn has been the subject of heavy interest this summer, with a report by Sky Sports (live transfer blog, August 4th at 14:13) citing both Middlesbrough and Derby County as suitors while Sheffield United have reportedly made a bid.

Ipswich are said to be holding out for a fee in the region of £8 million for the player (East Anglian Times), while it has been suggested in the same report that Waghorn is looking to leave Portman Road.

The former Rangers man scored an impressive 16 Championship goals last term and added a further 11 assists, making him one of the most effective forwards outside the Premier League.

Having sold Patrick Bamford to fellow Championship side Leeds United, Boro are seemingly in the market for another forward and boss Tony Pulis may see Waghorn as an ideal partner for Britt Assambolonga.

But Pulis faces competition from Derby and the Blades, with the latter desperate to bulk up their forward options having sold young talent David Brooks to Bournemouth earlier in the transfer window.

United have reportedly bid a club record £5 million for the player (Daily Mail), though they may have to up that offer ahead of the upcoming transfer deadline next week.

Ipswich boss Paul Hirst will no doubt be looking for a quick solution this close to the transfer deadline, and his absence against Blackburn suggests a transfer away from the club could be on the horizon.
