Newcastle United defeated Ipswich Town 3-0 at St James’ Park.
Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy says his side were beaten by the best team in the Championship and backs the Magpies to go on and win the league, the BBC reports.
Newcastle extended their winning run to five matches as they swept past the Tractor Boys at St. James’ Park, winning by a 3-0 scoreline although it could have been as many as five or six.
Ayoze Perez gave the hosts a lead in the first minute, and after long spells of domination Newcastle secured the points when Perez and Matt Ritchie added more goals in the final 20 minutes.
Speaking to the BBC after the game, McCarthy felt his side were powerless to stop who he believes are the best team in the league and backs Rafa Benitez’s men to go on and win the Championship.
“We were beaten by the best team. If you see a better team than that this year I’d be surprised,” McCarthy said after the game.
“I’ve just spoken to the players and there’s not a lot more we could have done. We tried everything to stop them. The one pleasing thing is we kept it at 1-0 for 70 minutes.
“All three finishes were fabulous. They were better than us, they are better than us, and they will be champions in my view.”
Newcastle’s comfortable victory was their fifth in a row and their tenth league win in their last 12 matches.
After losing their opening two matches of the season in somewhat surprising fashion, the Magpies have shown exactly why they were the pre-season favourites with a number of top performances.
The last time the Toon Army were in the Championship they ended the season with a whopping 102 points, and on current form not many would be surprised to see them repeat such a figure this term.
