Ipswich boss shares talks held with reported Sheffield United target Martyn Waghorn

Ipswich Town’s Martyn Waghorn has been linked with Derby County, Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest.

Ipswich Town boss Paul Hurst has told striker Martyn Waghorn that he wants the player to remain at the club amid interest from Derby County, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United, the Mirror report.

According to the Mirror (live transfer blog, July 20^th at 10:27am), Ipswich are looking to freshen up their attack with moves for Barnsley’s Tom Bradshaw and Bristol Rovers man Ellis Harrison.

Ipswich’s interest in the duo have seemingly come as a result of fellow striker Waghorn reportedly nearing an exit, with several Championship clubs taking a strong interest in the former Rangers man.

But Hurst still wants the striker to remain at Portman Road, telling reporters of a conversation he held with Waghorn amid the speculation over his future this summer.

“I’ve said to Martyn I would like him to stay at the football club and we’ll see how that unfolds.“I’m not here to try and fool anyone, I never do, because there is interest there – firm interest,” Hurst was quoted as saying.

Waghorn netted 16 Championship goals and added a further 11 assists at Ipswich last season, prompting several clubs to take a look at him this summer

The report in the Mirror name both Derby and Forest among those interested in the 28-year-old, with the east Midlands duo perhaps still looking to bolster their attacks ahead of the transfer deadline.

But the latest club to have made a move for him is Sheffield United, with the Daily Star reporting a £5 million bid lodged by the Blades as they look to use some of the cash they made from selling David Brooks.

The Yorkshire club will want to add goals and creativity to their team after selling star youngster Brooks, and they may see Waghorn as the ideal player to spearhead another challenge for the top six this coming season.

Ipswich may not want to sell their talisman this summer, but after spending just £250,000 to bring him to Portman Road they stand to make a sizeable profit should he depart the club before deadline day.
