Former Arsenal player Ian Wright has taken to social networking site Twitter to question why new England boss would play Tottenham Hotspur in a deeper role for the national team.
The Spurs midfielder had an unbelievable club campaign last season, yet like a number of his teammates he failed to replicate his Premier League form for the national team at the European Championships.
Roy Hodgson ultimately left the Three Lions following the disappointment in France, and now Sam Allardyce is in charge and ready to manage his first game when England take on Slovakia this weekend.
Many supporters are intrigued to see which players are named on the teamsheet, and former Arsenal player Wright says he would not be surprised to see Dele Alli start the game on the bench.
The former MK Dons man is versatile and can play as a central midfielder or further forward in an attacking role – a position many feel the Spurs ace performs to a higher standard.
But with players such as Adam Lallana, Wayne Rooney, Raheem Sterling and Michail Antonio vying for attacking positions, Dele could find himself out of the first-team picture.
With Sterling and Antonio in good form, the duo may start in wide areas leaving only two or three spots in the middle for a nuber of players to compete for – including Dele’s Spurs teammate Eric Dier.
Wright evidently feels Dele’s defensive capabilities aren’t quite as impressive as his impact going forward, suggesting Allardyce would be wise to leave him out of the eleven to face Slovakia.
