Hull City defender Reece Burke says Derby County’s 4-0 win over the Tigers in the Carabao Cup in midweek illustrates the strength in depth the Rams have in their ranks, hullcitytigers.com report.

The two Championship clubs faced off in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday with Derby running out comfortable winners, albeit against a weakened Hull side as manager Nigel Adkins made multiple changes.

The Rams also made several changes, yet they still fielded the likes of Tom Huddlestone, Jack Marriott, Florian Jozefzoon, Scott Malone and Derby’s most expensive summer signing Martyn Waghorn.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Burke says the gulf in class between the two supposed weakened starting elevens only goes to highlight the great strength in depth available to Derby boss Frank Lampard.

“Obviously, I didn’t play in the cup tie but it was good to watch them and see what they’re all about. It was a little bit of an insight that you don’t usually get as you don’t play the same team back-to-back in different competitions very often,” Burke explained.

“The team they put out showcased the strength-in-depth they have in their ranks and they’ll come back to the KCOM Stadium today looking for another win to continue their promising start to the season.”

Do Derby have one of the strongest squads in the Championship?

Derby boss Frank Lampard made several new additions to the squad during the transfer window, bringing in the likes of Marriott and Waghorn on permanent deals while adding Mason Mount, Harry Wilson and Fikayo Tomori on loan.

With only a handful of players departing the club, including strikers Cameron Jerome and Chris Martin who has joined Hull on a season-long loan, Derby boast one of the biggest squads in the Championship.

The Rams have strength in depth in almost every position, with players such as Jacob Butterfield, Alex Pearce, Duane Holmes, Huddlestone and Marriott yet to make a start for the club in the league.

Having such a big squad of top players should see the Rams challenge for a top six spot this season but keeping so many players happy with bit-part roles could be Lampard’s biggest challenge this term.
