Hull City have been linked with Middlesbrough’s Ashley Fletcher.
Hull City manager Nigel Adkins says the club were very close to signing Middlesbrough’s Ashley Fletcher during the summer and suggests he is keen on revitalising a deal for the forward, the Hull Daily Mail report.
“Ashley is a player who we actually had down at Cottingham in the summer. It didn’t happen, Middlesbrough pulled the deal at the very last second, which was a shame,” Adkins explained.
“He’s one of many talented footballers that we’ve tracked. We have spoken with Middlesbrough about Ashley and you never know. As it stands at the moment, it’s not happening. But that’s not to say it might not happen, if that makes sense.”
Fletcher joined Boro from West Ham United for a reported £6.5 million fee (BBC) back in the summer of 2017, signing a four-year deal with the club.
But he has struggled to make an impact on Teesside, spending the second half of last season on loan at rivals Sunderland where he managed just two goals in 16 appearances.
Fletcher has made just six appearances for Boro this term, with the majority of those coming off the bench, with manager Tony Pulis preferring the likes of Jordan Hugill and Britt Assombalonga to lead the line.
Hull are on an excellent run in the Championship, winning their past five games on the spin which has seen the Tigers climb the table as they now sit just three points behind seventh place Nottingham Forest.
Adkins will be hoping to strengthen in January to help keep momentum, but with finances tight the Tigers’ best hope may be to look at the loan market with Fletcher a potential option.
