‘How would he know?’: Rangers fans react to Warburton’s advice to catch Celtic

Mark Warburton has had his say on Rangers’ current situation.

A number of Rangers supporters have taken to social networking site Twitter in order to question former boss Mark Warburton, following his advice on how the club can catch Old Firm rivals Celtic.

The Hoops’ recent 3-2 victory over Rangers at Ibrox extended their lead at the top of the Scottish Premier League and took them one step closer to making it yet more successive top-flight titles.

Celtic certainly have a strong hold at the top of Scottish football right now, and it is up to Rangers to find a way of closing the gap and once again challenging their eternal rivals for top domestic honours.

Speaking on Sky Sports earlier on Wednesday, former boss Warburton believes the financial benefits from Champions League football is a defining factor and adds that current boss Graeme Murty needs time.

“The longer Celtic are exposed to Champions League football, the greater the financial divide becomes. Rangers need the investment. They are aspiring to get back to the top of Scottish football but it will take time and it will certainly take some investment,” Warburton told Sky Sports.

“If you are going to give Graeme that chance, be patient with him. If the fans think he is going to immediately challenge Celtic next year, if he’s not sacked him by Christmas, then you are going to have the same old problems.

“Give the man a chance, give him the time, give him the backing verbally and financially that he needs to manage a club of that stature.”

Warburton was in charge of Rangers for two seasons, guiding the club to the Scottish Championship title and also reaching the Scottish Cup Final where they ultimately lost 3-2 to Hibernian.

The former Nottingham Forest manager’s advice is sound, yet a little frustrating for Rangers fans to listen to considering the backing he received at Ibrox and how he wasted valuable funds during his second season.

The likes of Joey Barton, Clint Hill, Philippe Senderos, Joe Garner, Matt Gilks, Joe Dodoo, Jordan Rossiter and Niko Kranjcar all joined the club and struggled for one reason or another, prompting disappointment.

Reacting on Twitter to Warburton’s comments, many Rangers fans believe their former boss is no longer in a position to offer advice considering his spell and the highlighted poor transfer policy he adopted.
