Sheffield Wednesday have yet to sign anybody this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay has told reporters that he hopes his club’s academy stars can impress this summer and push for a starting spot in the opening game of the season, the Sheffield Star reports.

While this is a situation all Owls supporters will be keen to see, Luhukay’s hopes of the academy stars impressing this summer could also point to a lack of transfer activity.

“We started pre-season with 30 players and we have eight young players from our academy with us. I will see in pre-season how they develop, grow and progress,” the Owls boss said.

“We will try to develop them. Maybe one of these players will start the first game. I hope the players make positive progression. Maybe one of them will surprise us.”

Wednesday’s financial situation has been well documented, with the club nearing the Financial Fair Play limit following their failure to secure promotion to the Premier League.

The Yorkshire club pushed hard for Championship promotion over the past three seasons, spending big on both wages and transfer fees as they looked to finally make their long-awaited return to the top flight.

But in trying to do so, Wednesday risked a lot by spending big on established players with little re-sale value, and now they are seemingly stuck with several under-performers they cannot shift on.

It has been suggested that Wednesday will have to sell first before buying this summer, but as of yet they have not found a buyer for players such as Jordan Rhodes or Steven Fletcher who have become surplus to requirements.

Luhukay will want to reshape his squad to aid his side’s promotion push this season but, without being able to do so up until now, it appears he is pinning his hopes on an academy player or two stepping up.

The Owls have several highly-rated youngsters at the club, although whether any can make the grade this summer remains to be seen while the future of Sean Clare is presumably still up in the air.
