Former boss Harry Redknapp claims Birmingham City overruled his plan to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper John Ruddy in favour of David Stockdale, the Telegraph reports.

“I don’t think any of the signings were mine. I was taking John Ruddy on a free transfer from Norwich and instead they brought in David Stockdale from Brighton. The director of football [Jeff Vetere] wasn’t brought in by me either,” Redknapp explained.

Birmingham are reportedly facing a 12-point deduction in the Championship after falling foul of Financial Fair Play rules and many supporters are laying the blame at Harry Redknapp’s door.

The former Tottenham Hotspur boss took charge of the club in 2017 and saw as many as 14 new players arrive during that summer, including the likes of Jota, Harlee Dean and David Stockdale.

But Redknapp has since come out and defended his position, claiming he was not in charge of any of the signings as he plotted to instead bring in John Ruddy who was being released from his contract at Norwich City.

Ruddy, though, went on to join Wolves and played 45 games as the west Midlands side romped to the Championship title. Ruddy was later selected in the PFA Team of the Year, was given the Golden Glove award for a record 24 clean sheets and rewarded for his excellent performances with a new contract until 2020.

The 32-year-old may now be second choice behind Rui Patricio, yet he remains a favourite among the Wolves supporters and looks set to feature at Wembley in the upcoming FA Cup semi-final with Watford.

Stockdale, meanwhile, has been sent out three times on loan at League One clubs this season and currently finds himself at Coventry City.
