Former Manchester United player Ryan Giggs suggests the lack of a 20-goal-a-season scorer and a top class goalkeeper could prevent Liverpool from winning the title this season, The Telegraph report.

The Reds have so far proven why they are considered contenders for the Premier League title, taking 20 points from their opening nine league matches and winning at places such as Arsenal and Chelsea.

No Premier League team has scored more goals than Liverpool so far this season, with the likes of Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino all chipping in with the goals.

Giggs, however, feels the lack of a natural 20-goal-a-season man could hinder Liverpool come next May while he also holds reservations over the quality of the Reds’ current goalkeepers.

“What they lack is a goalscorer who might get them 20 goals in a season and while Sadio Mane or Daniel Sturridge might prove me wrong, you do need one of those in a title-winning team,” he told The Telegraph.

“All the recent champions have had one: Jamie Vardy, Diego Costa, Yaya Toure (who scored 20 goals in 2013-2014, although Sergio Aguero is Manchester City’s key striker), Robin Van Persie.”

“At the other end I do not think they have a goalkeeper who is among the top players in that position in the league, although that could change over time.”

In the absence of Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool don’t predominently play with a true centre-forward which allows their attacking midfielders to roam free in the final third and contribute with goals.

Having scored four at Arsenal, four against Leicester City and five against Hull City, goals don’t seem to be a problem for the Reds yet the same arguably can’t be said at the opposite end of the pitch.

The Merseyside club have concded 11 goals so far this season, keeping just one clean sheet as question marks remain over the quality of their defence and new shot-stopper Loris Karius.
