Former Arsenal player Alan Smith has spoken out on the Gunners’ title hopes.
Pundit Alan Smith believes his former club Arsenal can still win the title this season, on the condition that they beat Chelsea and force the Blues into a poor run of form, Sky Sports reports.
The Gunners have recorded eight straight Premier League victories thanks to a 1-0 win over Burnley – the first time they’ve achieved such a feat since 2004.
Their form in 2015 has been better than any other club in England, and it has taken them to within four points of Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea at the top of the table.
Although the West Londoners have two games in hand, the general consensus suggests the title is far from a foregone conclusion with the two clubs set to meet at the Emirates Stadium in two weeks’ time.
Former Arsenal player Alan Smith believes that match could still have a huge significance, telling Sky Sports that it’s a must-win game for the Gunners if they still harbour any hopes of lifting the title this season.
“They have to beat [Chelsea] if they are going to win the league, and that will put doubt in the mind of Jose Mourinho’s players,” Smith explained.
“The way they’re playing, they’ve got more than enough going forward to make chances and score. Even against a defence like Chelsea’s.
“But they can’t afford any slip-ups you would probably say because you really cannot see Chelsea dropping many other points.”
Can Arsenal win the title this season?
Despite their wonderful form, it’s surely still a case of too little, too late when it comes to winning the title due to Mourinho’s side holding such a firm advantage.
With only 18 points left for the Gunners to claim, five victories from eight will hand the Stamford Bridge outfit the title, though they may not even need that many.
With four of the bottom seven plus Crystal Palace still to play for the Blues, it would take an unrealistic, catastrophic run of form to prevent the title heading to West London.
