Forget Foderingham, Owls should target Rangers favourite Josh Windass instead

Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham.

According to a report in the Scottish Sun, Sheffield Wednesday are monitoring Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham as the former Wigan Athletic man looks set to leave Ibrox.

With the pending arrival of fellow shot-stopper Allan McGregor, Foderingham is poised to leave the Gers this summer, with Wednesday and Nottingham Forest alert to the situation.

The 27-year-old would be a decent signing for Forest considering their current number one Costil Pantilimion is only on loan, but links to Hillsborough on the other hand do not really make any sense.

Even if the popular Kieren Westwood leaves the Owls this summer, the Yorkshire club have the impressive Joe Wildsmith ready as a full-time replacement, while fellow youngster Cameron Dawson is also in the fold.

If there is one area Wednesday certainly do not need to look at strengthening this summer it is in the goalkeeping department. However Rangers do have another popular figure who would undoubtedly be a hit at Hillsborough.

Josh Windass has come on leaps and bounds during the past 12 months at Ibrox, with the 24-year-old netting an impressive 12 league goals from midfield and a further five in cup competitions.

Wednesday boast a competitive midfield but the likes of Barry Bannan, Kieran Lee, Joey Pelupessy, Sam Hutchinson, Sean Clare and David Jones are deep-lying players who rarely pose a threat in the final third; six goals between them tells its own story.

Jos Luhukay’s side lacks a midfielder capable of netting double figures, and one who would support the likes of Gary Hooper and Fernando Forestieri by closing the space and making those runs into the box.

Windass’s goal-scoring form for Rangers is no fluke, as he netted 16 goals in 32 League Two games for Accrington Stanley in the 2015/16 campaign prior to moving north of the border.

If Wednesday feel they can bolster their squad by signing a player from the Scottish Premiership, then seeking a deal for the Rangers attacking midfielder makes far more sense than plotting a move for Foderingham.
